The Hosted Payload Alliance will kick off the Hosted Payload Forum track at Satellite 2014 with a keynote panel entitled “Hosted Payload Forum: Leveraging the Commercial Space Sector for Enhanced Affordability and Resilience.” The session will take place on Monday, March 10 from 9:00 am – 10:15 am in room 201 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Satellite 2014 conference will be held from March 10-13, 2014.

The confirmed panel of government experts, which will be moderated by Kay Sears, President, Intelsat General, includes Cristina Chaplain, Director, U.S. Government Accountability Office; James Reuther, Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Technology Mission Directorate, NASA; CAPT Jon Kennedy, Chief, COMSATCOM Center, Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA); and Steven Miller, Director of Advanced Systems Cost Analysis, OSD/Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation.  Also invited, is Rob Aalseth, Chief, Advanced Concepts Division at the Space and Missile Systems Center/MC.

As described in the online Satellite 2014 Conference Program (link below), this panel of government experts will explain the challenge their departments and agencies have faced and the mitigation strategies they are leading to adapt existing acquisition practices to expand the scope of goods and services they are purchasing from the commercial sector and how they are adjusting their cost analysis and evaluation processes to account for commercial pricing and business tempo. Specifically, they will discuss plans and processes their departments and agencies have for:
  • Exploring inventive, nontraditional arrangements for acquiring commercial space goods and services to meet United States Government requirements,
  • Employing measures such as public-private partnerships and hosting government capabilities on commercial spacecraft,
  • Purchasing operational data products from commercial satellite operators in support of government missions,
  • Expanding mission architectures to include commercially hosted capabilities.
